The popular notion among a large segment of the population can be that a public service job is an arm-chair job. However, the job of a data analyst is sector agnostic and hectic in spite of it being a public service or a government one.
This especially holds true in the case of Vikas Babel, works as the VP of Business Intelligence at the State Bank Of India Mutual Fund (SBIMF), where his responsibility includes understanding, designing, data analysis, visualization and creating meaningful reporting.
SBIMF is a joint venture between India’s largest bank – the State Bank of India (SBI) and an international fund management company called Amundi. It provides different types of mutual funds, mutual fund calculators, a guide to mutual funds, sip investment etc to scores of its customers across the world.
Babel’s role as a senior data science professional at a public office brings to light how even government establishments are changing with the evolving times. For this week’s edition of ‘The Day In The Life Of,’ we caught him with to know more about his role in SBIMF.
A normal working day for Babel starts as early as 6 am in the morning when he goes for a walk and makes time for a few exercises, before settling for his daily dose of news with a hot cup of masala tea.
As for his work, it begins at 9 AM and can stretch up to 8.30 pm in the evening. Depending on the responsibility and if he is required to attend a number of meetings, his days can stretch longer.
“Often timelines are tough to meet which means additional hours at work, but my wife is very understanding and supportive,” says Babel when asked about meetings and office hours eating into his personal time.
However, he states that his weekends are meant for spending time with his family and admits that he is a social butterfly.
He is presently part of multiple projects, “There are multiple projects we are working on. We have a lot of reporting on Business Intelligence tool (Power BI), Analytics programming on R and detailed analysis on SSRS reporting,” Babel points out.
As far as his work is concerned, Babel feels that his company has given him the right platform to excel and grow career-wise. When asked about his career plans, he says,”Creating more awareness on benefits of Analytics and how the business can leverage and grow.”
