Apollo Hospitals, one of the leading healthcare chains in India, has been employing artificial intelligence to make healthcare more accessible and accurate for a while now. At the leadership summit 2022 in India, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about the tech giant partnering with Apollo to develop a cardiac prognosis model that will be trained on data from South Asians.

The Indian-origin chief said that Apollo, through all of their deployments, is building a model with a more accurate predictive capability that will be available as an API to every hospital worldwide. Heart attacks can be prevented by analysing cardiac risk scores. But the existing models have been trained on the data of the Europe or the US population, which fails to predict the risk score for Indians. So, Apollo and Microsoft have collaborated to develop a machine learning-backed model to give a non-bias AI preventive cardiac risk score. Apollo claims that the initial results are encouraging as the accuracy of this model is double the existing one.

Given that South Asians are genetically four times more likely to develop the risk of heart disease, that too up to a decade earlier, it is important to CREATE awareness for the same. Apollo has been vocal about it for a long and partnered with Microsoft to set up National Clinical Coordination Committee for combating cardiovascular diseases in 2019 through AI-powered risk API.

In February 2022, Apollo also teamed up with San Francisco-based deep tech startup 8chili to bring virtual reality solutions to healthcare. Around the same time, its subsidiary Healthnet Global introduced Automaid, a smart in-patient room automation system capable of remote patient monitoring and triaging. Soon in the March of the same year, Apollo launched ProHealthDeepX, which shows how a patient’s risk factors for heart disease affect their heart through an immersive mixed reality experience using the Microsoft HoloLens 2. It uses Apollo’s in-house AI tool to develop a cardiac risk score, which is then paired with the patient’s vitals and medical background to generate a 3D representation of their heart. Besides Apollo, Microsoft has also collaborated with OpenAI to employ GPT-3 to facilitate collaboration between employees and clinicians and improve the efficiency of healthcare teams.

Microsoft isn’t the only deep tech that Apollo has collaborated with. Google announced a partnership with Apollo Hospitals in India at the Google for India 2022 event to enhance the implementation of deep learning models for x-rays and other diagnostic procedures.
