The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur is launching a new BTech programme in artificial intelligence and data science from the academic session 2020-21. The new undergraduate programme will have courses in computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and their applications in various domains.
According to the institute, students, once opted for the course, will be able to take a specialisation in various areas including visual computing, socio-digital realities, language technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence and others. In IIT-Jodhpur’s official release, it has been mentioned that, with the course, enrolling students will also have the option to take up MBA (tech) in their fifth year as a dual-degree option in the School of Management and Entrepreneurship.
Prof Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT-Jodhpur, said that, with the vision of creating AI for everything, “students belonging to the academic programmes in artificial intelligence, data and computational sciences will be part of scientific innovations for addressing local and global engineering and social problems in close collaboration with industry.”

He further stated that this course has been designed to enable students to be part of the institute’s initiatives for creating a better livelihood for all with artificial intelligence. “IIT-Jodhpur would like AI and data science students to explore transdisciplinary research agenda fostering collaborative opportunities across all the departments of IIT Jodhpur and partner organisations,” said Prof Chaudhury.
This BTech programme will provide students with an opportunity to choose a minor area which would prepare them for an industry-ready career in the field of artificial intelligence and data science.
IIT-Jodhpur has already established a virtual reality and augmented reality lab by Samsung, along with an AI Supercomputer (A-100) from NVIDIA besides DGX-2. The institute claims to establish a technology innovation hub for the domains of computer vision, virtual reality and augmented reality in association with the Department of Science and Technology to the tune of ₹115 crores.
The institute already has an MTech program in artificial intelligence, data, and computational science, along with an MTech-PhD dual degree program in artificial intelligence. And, with this new BTech program in AI and data science, IIT Jodhpur has positioned itself as a premier institute to have courses in emerging technologies at all three levels.
