The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has announced the addition of seven new programmes to its curriculum in select areas of artificial intelligence, data science, engineering, architecture, economic and management, for the upcoming session 2021-22. According to the institute, these seven newly launched programmes are launched to meet the rising demand for new-age technologies and professionals from these fields.

The launch of these seven programmes was done via a virtual ceremony held by IIT Roorkee. The programmes include six postgraduate degree courses, including MTech. in artificial intelligence and MTech. in data science; MTech in microelectronics and VLSI, under the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering; MTech in dam safety and rehabilitation, under the proposed International Centre for Dams; MDes in industrial design and Masters in innovation management, under the Department of Design; and one five-year integrated programme in MS economics.

Talking about the launch, Professor Ashutosh Sharma, The Secretary for the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, believes that the launch of these programmes is a step towards the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and expanding the accessibility of education for students and working professionals.

He stated that with these programmes, the institute aims for ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ and will facilitate quality education to help create future leaders, which is critical for emerging India. According to the institute, these new programs will bridge the gap between learning and required experience as well as alter the mindset towards learning.

The MTech programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science will be taught by the virtual centre Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Data Science (CAIDS) and are aimed to develop new and skilled manpower by offering focused training and promoting research and consultancy. The programmes have been exclusively designed for working professionals to advance their theoretical knowledge, improve their technical know-how and enhance their practical skillset. Alongside, the programmes will also aid AI and data science projects running at national and international levels.
