India’s Silicon Valley to get IoT- enabled roads

Witnessing another round of development in the Internet of Things industry, the IT capital and the Silicon Valley of India is soon to become first of its kind smart city, with ‘SMART SURE’ roads running across central areas of the city.

Worth Rs. 2,090-crore, this IoT enabled solution would be spread across central business district area of Bengaluru including MG road, Vidhan Soudha, Brigade road and Commercial road. ‘SMART SURE’, a terminology by the civic corporation, would mean that these streets will have Wi-Fi, 30 e-rickshaw stands, 35 e-toilets, water ATMs, 50 smartcard-enabled public bicycle sharing points, 420 sensor-based smart dustbins, vending kiosks connected to 1250 smart telecom towers and more.

This decision comes as a part of an initiative to make Bengaluru a smart city. It has been shortlisted a while ago under the Smart Cities Mission, which was BBMP’s third attempt to get the city into PM’s ambitious project.

Around 21.8 sq km of the city’s core area including the historic Pete and Cantonment along with old markets such as Chickpet, Avenue road would also come under the Area Based Development (ABD), as a part of the project.

Stretching across 51.6 km of the city’s core business area, the roads would be redeveloped as per the Tender SURE guidelines. All the smart features installed would be controlled via a centralized system.

Smart Cities has been the most ambitious project since PM Narendra Modi launched Smart City Project, with many government and private organizations taking steps into making India Smarter. It was only recently that Huawei entered talk with the Indian government to offer smart city solutions.
