Share

With the Internet of things becoming the newest trend, and India being one of the hottest markets, many global players are diving into the space to reap maximum benefits. Adding onto the list of tech giants that have betted big into Indian iot space is LG, the South Korean consumer electronics major.

It is being reported that LG is planning to introduce IoT based products in the home appliances segment by later this year or early next year. The company is in talks with several mobile network operators to facilitate the same.

Ki Wan Kim, managing director, LGEI said that while the company’s parent has already been selling IoT products in Korea, in India the wait is due to the need of partnerships with the telecom service providers for data connectivity. He also mentioned that they are in negotiation with the stakeholders for the same.

Partnership with a telecom operator is the primary step that LG is looking forward to fulfill so as to have a network provider that can provide connection with different appliances in a household.

The company plans to introduce appliances equipped with features such as LG HomeChat and SmartThinQ that can enable consumers to control and operate home appliances via their smartphones, which off course needs internet connection.

Few of the home appliances that would be IoT enabled and controlled are washing machine, air conditioners and refrigerators.

With two manufacturing units at Greater Noida and Pune, LG has an impressive sales record and is a leader in various appliances segment. However, it is coping up with reviving their mobile phone business in India.

LG’s keen interest on IoT is evident from the fact that it provides IoT platform as a service offering.

It was in July this year that Bajaj Electricals vouched on IoT by tapping into the connected devices market.
