Founded by Dhiraj Rajaram in 2004, ‘Mu Sigma’ is a decision sciences company that offers data analytics services. In one of his earlier interviews, Rajaram said that he started the company as a 28-year-old with zero connections but managed to turn it around as a profitable organisation in just five years. Mu Sigma’s revenue comes from income from analytics and other IT services that it renders to the parent company. Mu Sigma is also often counted as the only Indian startup that has been profitable since its inception.
This is no mean feat, and a lot of credit goes to the initial crop of people who worked to build the company to the stature that it is at now. These executives have also emerged as influential analytics leaders in their own rights.
Mu Sigma analytics leaders
Ruble Joseph joined Mu Sigma in 2010 as a data scientist and worked in the company for over six years. At the time of leaving, he was the data science lead for engagement. During his time at Mu Sigma, Joseph donned many hats, contributing to the growth of Mu Sigma from a successful startup to the largest pure-play data science company. After departing MuSigma, Joseph joined eClerx as the associate vice president for the centre of excellence for advanced analytics. He currently heads global data science, analytics and AI at eClerx.
The current director of data science at Meta, David Zakkam is an analytics leader with an enviable experience of two decades, working with companies such as Swiggy and Intel. Zakkam spent a major chunk of his career working with Mu Sigma, which he started in 2008 as the senior manager. At the time of exit, Zakkam was the regional head (UK). At Mu Sigma, he consulted at 23 companies across nine verticals. He led analytics teams of over 450 people and managed senior client relationships in Europe and the US.
Prudhvi Vasa is an analytics leader at Postman. He started his career as a business analyst in 2010 with Mu Sigma. He worked there for nearly two years, rising up to the ranks of senior business analyst. Since leaving Mu Sigma, Vasa has worked with companies like Reliance and MySmartPrice.com.
Harish Gudi is the chief operating officer at Tredence. He joined Mu Sigma in 2008 as the SVP and business unit head of pharma and CPG. He worked at the company for nearly two years and at the time of leaving, he was the Senior VP and business unit head for technology, media, telecom, banking, financial services, and insurance.
Manish Singh joined Mu Sigma in the early years of his professional career in 2011 as a business analyst. He worked at the company for nearly five years, exiting as an associate manager. He then founded InnovatorsBay, a new-age software design and development company which served several Fortune 500 companies as well as startups. He is currently the CTO at Bengaluru-based Quber Tech.
Srinidhi Sharma Rao was part of Mu Sigma’s core leadership team for nearly six years between 2010 and 2016. He was the delivery lead there and led a team of 450 decision scientists, and managed revenues of over USD 40MM. During his tenure at the company, he served as the Big Data Analytics leader, management consultant, business analyst, and programmer. He helped in building and growing analytics practices in the organisation from the ground up. He is currently the Chief Strategy Officer at Aegon Life.
To founding successful companies
Founded in 2012, Tredence is a technology-agnostic services and solutions company. It offers analytics solutions in domains such as marketing, supply chain, operations, and pricing. The organisation adds an analytics layer to clients’ strategy, helping better company growth.
The company was founded by Shub Bhowmick, Sumit Mehra, and Shashank Dubey. Of the three, Bhowmick and Dubey are former Mu Sigma employees. Bhowmick worked at Mu Sigma for nine months as the senior director of sales and business development.
Dubey, on the other hand, was the senior manager at Mu Sigma, where he worked for nearly five years between 2008 and 2013. At present, he is the co-founder and head of analytics at Tredence.
Illinois-based ‘TheMathCompany’ was founded in 2016 by Sayandeb Banerjee, Aditya Kumbakonam, and Anuj Krishna. The company is a hybrid consulting firm that uses data analytics and engineering to carry out clients’ projects. The team includes data scientists, data engineers, analysts, and visualisation experts.
Like Tredence, the co-founders of TheMathCompany are also ex-Mu Sigma employees. Banerjee joined Mu Sigma in 2005 as the VP and worked there till 2016; he left the organisation as the apprentice leader. Apart from TheMathCompany, he is also the CEO and co-founder of Co.dx, which he founded in 2021.
Krishna joined Mu Sigma in 2007 as a business analyst. Working at the organisation for over nine years, Krishna rose in ranks and was the regional head when he was leaving the company. He is now the Chief Product and Operations Officer of Co.dx and co-founder of TheMathCompany.
Kumbakonam, the third co-founder of TheMathCompany and Co.dx worked at Mu Sigma between 2007 and 2016. He worked there as the delivery leader.
Serial entrepreneur Gunjan Kejriwal has co-founded three companies till now—Roomys, LocalPay, and BitClass. He is currently handling the third startup.
