The CEO of Quora, Adam D’Angelo, recently launched an AI platform, POE. As an independent product of Quora, a social question and answer website, POE – Platform for Open Exploration, works as an aggregator for several AI-powered chatbots. Like ChatGPT, users can have a dialogue-based interaction with different chatbots. It is currently available as an iOS app and will be rolled out to other platforms after integrating more AI bots in the coming months.

Poe is currently modelled from Open AI and Anthropic APIs, and the company expects to work with future models of AI chatbots. D’Angelo explains how there would be a surge in companies that will incline towards AI-based generative learning. The goal is to create a common platform for integrated usage of all of them.

The idea of launching such a platform is to provide users with one simple interface. Companies are working towards creating different AI solutions that are fine-tuned to their capabilities but these may not efficiently address all user needs. POE looks to bridge this gap by being a common platform for all. “We are in the process of making an API that will make it easy for any AI developer to plug their model into POE,” said the CEO on Twitter.

Quora has 400M monthly unique users, which provide a vast database of information but, the language model of Poe is currently not trained on writings provided by these Quora users. They might move to this training model in the future, and Quora users will have the option to opt-out if they don’t wish to include their data.

Like any aggregator model, the responsibility of content moderation will lie with the model providers and POE will not play any role apart from the standard laws that will be set. This is in line with any aggregator/marketplace model where control of the content posted by the provider is limited.

With OpenAI’s ChatGPT having a competitive edge and Google closely following with Anthropic acquisition, POE’s platform may not offer something different, but it is opening up a common space for all the emerging chatbot technologies. Companies looking to grab an existing user base who may not have something unique to offer can probably hop onto the aggregator model to push their businesses.
