Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has invested a whopping $75 million in knowledge sharing platform Quora, the creator of AI chatbot Poe (Platform for Open Exploration) which works as an aggregator for several such AI chatbots.
The funding aims to support the latter’s recently launched creator monetisation program, compensate bot creators, promote knowledge accessibility and democratise creative expression. The extra funding will be used to speed up progress, fostering a creator economy and empowering smaller AI entities, promoting global AI diffusion.
The $75 million funding will take Quora’s valuation to $500 million. “This means our valuation is lower than our previous peak, but we are happy to finally be marked to this new market. We see this investment by a16z’s growth team as a statement of confidence in our team and the potential for us to grow from here,” read the blog post.
According to Adam D’Angelo, the co-founder and chief of Quora, Poe aims to replicate the impact of early web browsers in advancing AI development by providing consumers with a suitable platform for interacting with various AI products and offering developers a straightforward way to create and deploy AI chat products to a broad audience. This includes facilitating the creation of bots through existing models and prompts or enabling developers to train their own models.
Modeled from Open AI and Anthropic APIs, Poe aims to be a common interface for different AI chatbots, facilitating integrated usage. D’Angelo, who is also a board member of OpenAI, anticipates a rise in companies leaning towards AI-based generative learning, and Poe seeks to provide a unified platform for these solutions. Despite Quora’s vast user base of 400 million, the language model is currently not trained on Quora user writing.
