Rapid digitisation, coupled with the big data revolution, has changed the way companies operate. Further, the way companies hire skilled talent in aiding them in their business and product development has also undergone a tectonic shift.
In a study conducted by Domino Data Lab and published by Wakefield Research, 71 percent of executives said their company expects growth from investment in data science. The research surveyed 300 executives in data science roles at companies with over USD 1 billion annual revenue.
“Forward-looking companies are leveraging data to solve problems and design strategies to improve business outcomes and performance,” said Satyam Mukherjee, associate professor, department of decision sciences, operations management, and information systems school of management and entrepreneurship (SME) at Shiv Nadar University (SNU).
Mukherjee completed his doctoral degree from IIT Madras. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Presidency College, University of Calcutta, and a master’s degree in Physics from the University of Pune. His research interests include network science, data analytics, open-source collaboration, and sports analytics, among others.
Before joining SNU, Delhi NCR, Mukherjee was a faculty member at the IIM Udaipur. He has also worked with Kellogg School of Management and Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO), Northwestern University Evanston, the USA as a Postdoctoral Fellow.
Challenges and opportunities
In 2019, Analytics India Magazine released a survey on challenges faced in the data science sector, and close to 28 per cent of people said that the biggest challenge faced by the data science and analytics sector is the lack of understanding of this sector by stakeholders. “At Shiv Nadar University, we believe that education is the driving force. We train our students with business use cases and applications, alongside the communication skills to seamlessly navigate through the real world,” said Mukherjee
“Our data science and analytics certification programme not only upskill the candidates, but also thrive in the business world,” said Mukherjee, pointing at the same report, which showed that nearly 46 per cent of excess believed in upskilling as the ways to increase talent pool in analytics.
Plus, 46 per cent of them believe that the management needs to be educated about the benefits of analytics through seminars, roadshows, events, etc. Mukherjee said that SNU is one of the only few universities in the country to actively curate workshops, masterclasses, seminars and events regularly to raise awareness in the industry across platforms.

In another study, Element AI said that only 25 per cent are ‘well-versed enough in the technology to work with teams to take it from research to application.’ A Gartner survey found that 54 per cent of CIOs view the skills gap as the biggest challenge facing their organisation. “I believe that SNU has been proactive in solving the country’s talent gap and is actively catering to the demand in the industry,” shared Mukherjee.
There’s more. Today, many companies find it difficult to solve the challenges of analytics adoption – be it finding the right talent or solving primary concerns about procuring data, externalities, hidden security vulnerabilities, model biases, etc.
Some of the other challenges that organisations are currently facing also include:
- The hiring of new talent with the required skills
- Finding the right data and data sizing
- Data literacy
- Consolidation of information
- Stakeholder commitment and identifying the right area to invest
- Right storytelling
- Identifying appropriate analytics use cases
- Creating data science models but not solving them
- Ensuring the security of data
Mukherjee said that the explosive growth of data science has created a huge demand and supply gap for data analytics professionals. “As a result, the vacant positions have outnumbered the available data scientists globally. Data science roles are now commanding salaries in this highly professional job market,” he added.
Further, he said that Shiv Nadar University is perfectly positioned in the space to solve all these challenges and more by offering data science and analytics for a business certification programme.
