Attrition Trends in India’s AI Workforce 2026: What the Numbers Show
AIM Research’s Attrition Study of AI and Data Professionals in India 2026 examines workforce movement across roles, experience levels, company types, sectors, and geographies, providing a structured view of how attrition patterns vary and where shifts in talent mobility are observed.
Attrition Patterns Across AI & Data Roles in India
The overall attrition rate for AI and data professionals is 12.3%. Attrition across AI and data roles in India varies by role type and skill maturity. Emerging roles such as GenAI, LLM engineering, and AI research show attrition levels of 31%–40%, reflecting strong demand and rapid technological change. In contrast, enterprise roles like Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Solutions Architects report lower attrition (5%-12%) due to stable, long-term integration, while platform and MLOps roles fall in the mid-range, aligned with growing enterprise adoption.

Sector Dynamics Shape AI Talent Mobility in India
Technology/Information/Internet (22.5%) and IT Services & Consulting (16.2%) show more dynamic workforce movement due to a higher concentration of AI roles and broader opportunities. Transportation/Logistics (14.0%) and Retail (12.4%) indicate balanced attrition as adoption grows but remains use-case focused. In contrast, Life Sciences (11.9%), BFSI (11.1%), and Manufacturing (10.7%) show more stable patterns due to domain requirements and longer project cycles, while Media & Telecommunications (6.5%) records the lowest attrition.

Early-Career Attrition Drives Movement Across AI Talent Hubs
Attrition across cities decreases with experience, indicating that early-career professionals show greater mobility. In the 1–2 year range, Mumbai, Delhi/NCR, and Chennai reflect higher movement due to wider availability of opportunities, while Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune show relatively lower attrition supported by internal role options.
In the 3–5 year range, attrition moderates across cities but remains more visible in Mumbai and Delhi/NCR, while Hyderabad and Pune reflect more stable patterns. Beyond 5 years, attrition declines across all cities, indicating stronger role alignment and longer-term engagement.

The Evolving AI Talent Landscape
Attrition across India’s AI and data workforce reflects a shift from high mobility in early-career and emerging roles to greater stability in experienced and enterprise-aligned functions. Differences across roles, sectors, company types, and cities indicate that talent movement is driven by demand for advanced skills, career progression, and access to opportunities. As AI adoption deepens, organisations will need targeted retention strategies aligned to role maturity and career stages.
