Writing a brilliant statement of purpose (SOP) for AI/ML programmes takes more than the usual essay structure. Just stating, “I majored in Computer Science with outstanding grades, and I want to become an ML expert” is inadequate. You need to have a good enough reason for why you’re pursuing it. You have to have a purpose. So when someone asks, “Why do you want to study AI/ML?” you must explain the focused sub-niche where you’re going to make a difference—that is the key to your machine learning SOP.

Here are eight dos and don’ts you must consider while producing an SOP that will help you stand out from the pool of brilliant applicants.

  1. Make it informative

The main objective of the SOP is to inform. Make sure it serves that purpose by producing an SOP that ticks all boxes of relevant points. Throwing in random information and cramming many things in a few lines will negatively impact your SOP.

When you talk about your projects, you must include details in a concise format. In addition, relate your projects from an AI/ML perspective to make a good impression on the selection board.

  1. Plagiarism is a big NO

Draft your SOP from scratch. It shouldn’t be plagiarised or an improvisation of an existing SOP sample. The SOP should be unique in that it tells your story. Replicating from general web templates will leave a bad impression and affect your admission process.

  1. Use a friendly tone

Though academic, the SOP should engage readers. Mould it in a tone that the selection board would love to read till the end. Use an active voice.

The tone should be a balance of formal and personal. Be clear, and make sure you do not sound confused. More importantly, use a writing style that reflects your confidence.

  1. Grammar matters

Ensure that the document is error-free and does not have any grammatical mistakes. Use a grammar tool to identify and rectify your grammatical errors. Additionally, avoid going back and forth in paragraphs.

  1. Coherence

An area that is often ignored but shouldn’t be. If the SOP lacks coherence, it will be a boring read. Therefore, ensure coherence throughout the write-up. Structure the sentences simply and chronologically. Avoid using flowery language and technical jargon.

  1. Comply with the institute’s guidelines

The SOP must adhere to the institute’s specific guidelines. Explain why you chose this particular institute amongst others. Focus on how your selection at the institute will benefit your future.

  1. Avoid last-minute writing

We are well aware of a student’s superhuman capacity to produce pages of an essay they left to do last-minute. Writing at the last minute is likely to increase the chances of mistakes. Getting your write-up ready at least a week before is highly recommended.

  1. Research thoroughly

Your SOP must show your basic understanding of the field and how well-researched you are. Remember that “acquiring advanced computer science knowledge” is not an objective. How are you going to use that as a tool? That is the argument you need to make in your SOP.
