Amazon on Monday launched a preview of its Amazon Q Developer integration for GitHub. This allows developers to build, review, and migrate code directly within their repositories.

The Amazon Q Developer GitHub app can be installed across all or select repositories. Once set up, developers can assign GitHub issues to it. Next, Amazon Q Developer uses the codebase and issue description to generate features or updates. The tool creates a pull request, informs developers through progress comments, and runs basic checks on its output.

Developers who do not want to create an AWS account can use Amazon’s generative AI developer agent right inside the workflow through the GitHub app.

The company demonstrated the integration in the blog post by building a .NET 9 web application from scratch.

After assigning issues to Amazon Developer Q, it generated a complete ASP.NET Core project and even flagged missing authorisation in a backend API, suggesting and implementing a security fix automatically.

“Using Amazon Q Developer in GitHub is like having a full-stack developer that you can collaborate with to develop new features, accelerate the code review process, and rely on to enhance the security posture and quality of your code,” the blog post mentioned.

In addition to feature development and code review, Q offers a code transformation agent that migrates legacy Java 8 or 11 applications to Java 17. The process follows the same pattern: label the issue, wait for the pull request, review, and iterate. For all the technical details, refer to the official documentation.

While still in preview, the new integration makes Q Developer one of the few AI coding assistants embedded so closely with GitHub. This is good news for developers, giving them options to use this or try GitHub Copilot with its new vibe coding abilities.
