If you type ai.com on your search bar, it directs you to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, inferring that it has purchased a new domain name for its popular LLM-based chatbot which can write codes and poems with equal proficiency.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s latest move to purchase a new domain name could be for a variety of reasons. Microsoft and Google are fierce competitors in the current race for AI supremacy, with both companies putting up cutthroat competition for dominance in the field.

However, this new development indicates that OpenAI and Microsoft are one step ahead in their efforts to make AI synonymous with ChatGPT—which they think is the present and future of artificial intelligence. This also comes after many users on Twitter were trolling ChatGPT over its two syllables, after Google released its large language model chatbot Bard. Now, with OpenAI positioning itself as ‘AI,’ it has quintessentially surpassed Bard.

Considering the impressive record of ChatGPT, with web traffic reaching as high as 672 million, the decision to opt for a shorter domain name could potentially help boost productivity and save time.

Meanwhile, as more individuals are now able to test out Microsoft's new AI-powered Bing, and the company is also working on an iOS version that will be released soon, it has been reported that OpenAI and Microsoft are collaborating with Apple to integrate ChatGPT–Bing technology on every iPhone.

Apple had Bing as their default search engine until 2017, when it shifted to Google Search. Google pays $15 billion annually to Apple to be the default on iOS. But if the new Microsoft–Apple partnership comes to fruition, it will deal a big blow on Google.

Google has already lost over $120 billion, as stocks nosedived by nearly 9% when the Bard-powered Google Search gave wrong results. However, Microsoft’s upgraded Bing also gave inaccurate results at its demo but went largely unnoticed.

Bing gave incorrect information on the cord size and noise level of a certain pet hair vacuum cleaner that was shown during the demo. Furthermore, it also distorted information about Mexico’s nightlife by listing incorrect operating hours and omitting vital information. Bing also misrepresented facts and numerical figures that were absent from the original texts while summarising financial records.

With the AI race scaling up rapidly, it has moved well beyond building something new and groundbreaking. Instead, it’s about who can execute faster and better, often leading to such missteps.
