At Tech World 2024, Lenovo launched the ThinkSystem N1380 Neptune, a water-cooling system built to support NVIDIA’s Blackwell platform and AI applications. The new Neptune chassis enables organisations to operate 100KW+ server racks without the need for specialised air conditioning, achieving 100% heat removal.

The unveiling took place in the presence of NVIDIA chief Jensen Huang, who said that Lenovo’s years of building supercomputers had finally paid off. Regarding the ThinkSystem N1380 Neptune, Huang said, “Tell me this isn’t beautiful. To an engineer, this is sexy.”

The company showcased its partnership with NVIDIA by introducing the Lenovo Hybrid AI Advantage. The ThinkSystem SC777 V4 Neptune utilises the N1380 to bring NVIDIA Blackwell and the NVIDIA GB200 to the enterprise market, enabling the deployment of trillion-parameter AI models in a compact design.

With the rise of AI adoption, data centers must manage increased thermal demands. Lenovo's N1380 and SC777 V4 Neptune are built to support these needs, allowing dense server racks to operate while reducing power consumption by up to 40%.

“For more than a decade, Lenovo has pioneered liquid cooling innovations, with the goal of bringing the power of high-performance computing to every organisation,” said Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqin Yang.

The ThinkSystem SC777 V4 Neptune features NVIDIA’s Quantum-X800 InfiniBand and Spectrum-X800 Ethernet platforms for advanced networking. It also supports NVIDIA AI Enterprise, streamlining the development of AI solutions.

Lenovo will offer NVIDIA GB200 rack systems to enhance AI training and data processing. The new ThinkSystem server employs advanced water cooling to maintain lower temperatures across critical components, allowing for AI model scaling up to 10 trillion parameters.

Designed for scalability, the ThinkSystem N1380 Neptune can be adapted from compact enclosures to full racks and data centers. The system is engineered for standard form factors, making it accessible for various organisation sizes.

It reduces power consumption by eliminating the need for internal airflow and fans, while integrated power conversion stations enhance overall system efficiency. Reliable cooling mechanisms ensure effective heat removal, and the system can operate at elevated water inlet temperatures, promoting energy reuse.

Lenovo’s Neptune technology has been a leader in liquid cooling for over a decade, boasting numerous patents and a focus on efficiency. The latest advancements utilise high-quality materials and innovative engineering to meet the demands of modern data centers.
