OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has named Raghav Gupta, the former Asia Pacific MD at Coursera, to lead its education division for India and the APAC region.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI's vice president and general manager for education, announced Gupta's appointment in Delhi on Monday, according to reports.
Last week, OpenAI revealed plans to establish its first office in India this year, emphasising its commitment to one of its essential markets.
Currently, OpenAI has another full-time employee in the country, Pragya Misra, who has been managing public policy and partnerships since 2023. Moreover, Rishi Jaitly, the former head of Twitter India, was appointed last year as a senior adviser to support government engagement regarding artificial intelligence policy.
For the education sector specifically, OpenAI is introducing India-centric initiatives, including a learning accelerator in collaboration with IIT Madras, AICTE and the education ministry. This accelerator aims to enhance the integration of OpenAI's AI products among educators.
Belsky additionally disclosed a $500,000 grant for IIT Madras, which is designated for extensive research and exploring cognitive outcomes related to the use of AI in educational settings.
On a broader scale, OpenAI is currently seeking to fill three sales roles in India: account director for digital natives, account director for large enterprise and account director for strategics.
Earlier in June, OpenAI partnered with the IndiaAI Mission to launch OpenAI Academy India, representing the first international expansion of OpenAI’s education platform. This initiative seeks to broaden AI skills training across the nation, focusing on a diverse audience that includes students, developers, educators, government officials, nonprofit leaders and small business owners.
The new Study Mode feature for ChatGPT was also created following observations made by the company's team during their visit to India, where they assessed the nation's educational and tutoring methodologies.
