SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has publicly acknowledged that he was ‘clearly wrong’ about Anthropic, describing the AI startup as the current leader in artificial intelligence and praising its latest models, Mythos and Fable.
In a post on X on July 9, Musk said no other company had released models as capable as Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable series and predicted that the company would soon launch an even more advanced successor.
“I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable, and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon.”
Musk also dismissed suggestions that he could use his company’s infrastructure relationship with Anthropic to undermine the AI firm.
“I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style.”
To make his point, Musk pointed to Tesla’s decision to open-source its patents and make its Supercharger network available to rival automakers. He also said SpaceX continues to launch competing satellite systems without raising prices or imposing unfair terms, adding that even his critics are free to use and criticise him on X.
The remarks mark a sharp reversal from Musk’s earlier criticism of Anthropic. Over the past year, he had repeatedly accused the company of political bias and questioned its prospects in the AI race. “Your AI hates Whites and Asians, especially Chinese, heterosexuals and men. This is misanthropic and evil,” he wrote on X in February earlier this year.
His latest comments come weeks after Anthropic entered a major compute partnership with SpaceXAI, securing access to more than 300 megawatts of compute capacity—equivalent to over 2,20,000 NVIDIA GPUs—from the Colossus 1 data centre. The agreement is reportedly valued at $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, although either side can terminate the deal with 90 days’ notice.
Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models have been at the centre of industry attention in recent weeks. The US government temporarily restricted foreign access to the models over national security concerns before later lifting the export controls after Anthropic agreed to additional security measures and government collaboration.
