The Indian government’s AI initiative, IndiaAI Mission, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to accelerate the responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The collaboration announced on May 7 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) aims to create a more connected and interoperable AI ecosystem for healthcare in India. The partnership will combine IndiaAI’s technology infrastructure and AI capabilities with ICMR’s expertise in biomedical research and public health.
Under the agreement, both organisations will work together on AI-driven healthcare innovation, research and deployment. The partnership will focus on improving access to high-quality healthcare datasets, enabling advanced AI research and developing solutions for public health challenges.
One of the key components of the collaboration is the integration of ICMR’s anonymised and ethics-approved health research datasets into IndiaAI’s AIKosh platform. The datasets, AI models and toolkits developed under ICMR’s Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework will be made accessible to researchers, startups, and innovators.
IndiaAI will also provide ICMR with subsidised access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure.
The two organisations will additionally co-develop AI applications targeting public health priorities in India. These projects will use ICMR’s disease-burden data along with IndiaAI’s computing and AI ecosystem support.
The collaboration builds on earlier partnerships between the two institutions. In September 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, a multilateral initiative launched with the United Kingdom and Singapore to promote responsible AI governance in healthcare.
The new partnership is expected to support innovation while ensuring ethical standards, data privacy and regulatory compliance in AI-based healthcare systems.
