Infosys reportedly plans to move between a quarter and one-third of its workforce into specialist roles as the Bengaluru-based IT services company expands its specialist talent base.
The plan was discussed by Infosys management during its three-day annual Americas confluence in Washington, DC, last week, where it met partners, advisers, and analysts, The Economic Times reported.
Infosys is also hiring talent from top Indian institutes and US campuses, often competing with AI labs for the same pool of engineers, according to people cited in the report.
AIM has reached out to Infosys for comment on the workforce transition and its specialist hiring plans.
Infosys has been expanding its AI capabilities and developing specialised roles within its workforce, including AI “builders” and “masters”. The company has also trained employees across functions to become AI-ready. In June 2025, Infosys said it had trained more than 2,75,000 employees in AI and generative AI.
The company has also invested in hiring employees with proven generative AI skills while upskilling its existing engineers.
The specialist-role plan comes alongside an earlier push to build a dedicated frontier engineering workforce. In July, CEO Salil Parekh said during the company’s post-earnings press conference, “Our plan is to have 6,000 frontier engineers over the next few years.”
Across the technology industry, companies are creating specialised positions such as Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs), agent architects, and agent orchestrators as they build teams around AI systems and embed them inside enterprises.
