Microsoft is restructuring its Copilot team and AI efforts, bringing its consumer and commercial Copilot businesses under a single unified structure, CEO Satya Nadella announced on March 17.
The move aligns Copilot development across four pillars: experience, platform, Microsoft 365 apps and AI models, as the company shifts toward AI systems capable of executing multi-step tasks.
“It’s clear a new era of productivity is emerging as AI experiences rapidly evolve from answering questions and suggesting code, to executing multi-step tasks with clear user control points,” Nadella said in a message to employees.
As part of the changes, Jacob Andreou will lead the Copilot experience across consumer and commercial segments as EVP, reporting directly to Nadella. Andreou previously led product and growth at Microsoft AI.
The company also reaffirmed its focus on building advanced AI models. Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, will continue to lead Microsoft’s Superintelligence team, which was formed last November. It focuses on model development, cost efficiency, and enterprise capabilities.
“Progress at the AI model layer is more critical than ever to our success as a company over the next decade,” Nadella said.
Other leadership roles include Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna, who will oversee Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot platform. Together with Andreou and Suleyman, they form the Copilot Leadership Team.
Suleyman said the restructuring will allow him to focus on long-term AI model development and spend more time building new models. “This requires us to build frontier models, at scale, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” he said.
The changes come as Microsoft expands its agentic AI capabilities, including recent announcements such as Copilot Tasks and agent-based features across Microsoft 365.
“Our org boundaries will simply reflect system architecture and product shape such that we can deliver more coherent and competitive experiences,” Nadella said.
