OpenAI reported that weekly active Codex users in India increased 27-fold since early 2026, with daily interactions over 20-fold by late April, based on data shared at Mumbai Tech Week.
The company said India is now among the top five countries globally for Codex adoption and among the top ten for engagement. The figures add to earlier OpenAI data, indicating that India is one of its most active markets for advanced AI usage.
OpenAI said usage is expanding beyond software development. More than 25% of Codex requests in India are now for non-coding tasks, including information synthesis, document drafting, research automation, workflow organisation, and communication-related work.
The company linked the growth to broader adoption among founders, researchers, students, operators, and business teams. “Adoption is not just happening among software engineers,” said Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for APAC at OpenAI.
He added that users are increasingly employing Codex to “turn ideas into working outcomes faster” and to move “from intent to execution across almost all aspects of work.”
India's growing use of Codex is also being supported by a broader builder ecosystem and enterprise deployments.
OpenAI said it has previously announced Codex-related collaborations with Indian companies, including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Razorpay, across software engineering and enterprise workflow applications.
In February, OpenAI's ‘Signals’ reportidentified India as the fastest-growing market for Codex, with usage for coding tasks running at roughly three times the global average. The company also said coding activity was concentrated in major technology hubs, with Telangana ranking first, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
OpenAI has continued to expand Codex beyond its original coding focus in recent months. The company recently added mobile access via the ChatGPT app, introduced new workflow features such as Goal Mode and richer context handling, and rolled out GPT-5.5 as the latest recommended model for coding, research, and knowledge work tasks.
OpenAI has also reported rapid global growth for the product, with more than 4 million developers using Codex weekly as of April.
