When Mukesh Ambani said data is the new oil of the digital era, he surely meant it. While data and analytics is seen as a missed opportunity for Indian telcos, Reliance Jio seems to have joined the BDA bandwagon gathering data and mining it into a suitable architecture, making data the bulwark for market share expansion. Reportedly, Reliance Jio is India’s only 5G ready network. The telecom behemoth that is driving the shift from voice to data, in view of dwindling share of revenue in voice and SMS built a solid subscriber base, a whopping 120 million since its launch in September 2016.
According to the company’s recent analyst meeting, ₹1 lakh crore of revenues will shift from voice to data revenues. The telecom major stated that the industry will continue to grow to ₹3 lakh crore by 2020-21. And over the next 3-4 years, the growth will be strong and led entirely by a data boom, and it has created capacity to serve 60 per cent of this demand. Jio effectively capitalized on the shifting dynamics of mobile usage in India from voice to data. With this move, Jio not only consolidated the market share by expanding its subscriber base but also won over the millions of underserved Indians left behind in the Digital India campaign with the launch of an entry-level smartphone. This move enabled the telco to capture larger amount of customer data that can be used to tailor products and prepare networks for future demands. Jio’s lofty goal is to provide 4G coverage to 90 per cent of the Indian population by 2017.
Jio – key to the long-term monetization strategy
- The 120 million subscriber base presents Jio an opportunity to collect data on consumer habits, can develop POCs around it and deliver more focused customer-centric objectives.
- The biggest advantage for Jio is that it will get a granular, location-based and real-time view of user and will create deeper and richer insights to better engage customers.
- OTT players like Facebook and Google eat it into the revenue share. By leveraging and sharing some data effectively, telcos can use real-time data such as location, preferences to participate in emerging offerings. Interestingly, Jio’s data plans added to Facebook revenues in India.
- The maturing voice market presents several challenges to the telecom sector. With a dwindling voice and SMS revenue, operators have to find new ways to monetize. Big data can be used to forecast and better understand changes in user behavior and tweak offerings accordingly.
- Integrating AI applications to push tailored recommendations. According to Mukesh Ambani who said reportedly, if one is watching a movie, machine learning algorithms will kick in to push tailored recommendations.
- Another big area poised for growth in the Jio revolution is healthcare, Ambani revealed. The team is developing a program to read X-rays and suggest findings to radiologists. Jio will soon be primed for mission-critical applications in healthcare such as diagnostics and reading MRI scans.
- Analysts are pegging that Jio – the youngest mobile operator would also differentiate through OTT strategy. By competing for IPL’s digital media rights and subsequently bagging it, Jio would potentially upend the Big 3 leading players in India.
- By building on OTT-type capabilities, Jio will pivot from being an access provider to a digital service provider. Jio’s apps such as JioTV and JioCinema are already counted among the top 10 leading video streaming apps.
