Ian Goodfellow, particularly renowned for his invention of generative adversarial networks (GANs) in 2014, which led to the development of most of what we know about generative AI, is currently a research scientist at DeepMind.
Before joining DeepMind, Goodfellow worked at Google, where he led a team that developed a convolutional neural network to automatically transcribe building addresses from street view images, achieving human-like accuracy. He also conducted critical research on adversarial attacks, demonstrating how AI systems can be tricked into misidentifying objects with slight manipulations, and proposed methods to mitigate these vulnerabilities.
Goodfellow served as the director of machine learning at Apple from 2019, further advancing AI capabilities in industry applications. Goodfellow's PhD in machine learning from the University of Montreal, supervised by Yoshua Bengio, laid the foundation for his groundbreaking research.
