Political deepfakes are a global problem. Oren Etzioni, Professor Emeritus of computer science at the University of Washington, was among the first researchers to warn us about the repercussions of political deepfakes.
Through his non-profit, TrueMedia.org, Etzioni has made efforts to limit the damage done by deepfakes, which appears more and more realistic with each passing day.
He was the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), leading the organisation from its inception in 2013 until late 2022. He has authored multiple award-winning technical papers, achieving an H-index of 100 (which means 100 of his papers have each been cited over 100 times).
Additionally, he serves as a technical director of the AI2 Incubator and a Venture Partner at Madrona. He has also founded several companies, including Farecast, which was acquired by Microsoft for $115 million.
