Tata Motors’ partnership with Microsoft will help in forging a connected driving experience

Microsoft’s connected vehicle technologies combine artificial intelligence (AI), advanced machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities on the global hyper-scale Azure cloud. Automobile enthusiasts might be excited to hear that in a most recent strategic collaboration Tata Motors will be utilizing Microsoft’s technology to reimagine a connected and personalized driving experience

With this move, Tata Motors intend to traverse the digital and physical worlds and create a highly personalized, smart and safer driving experience across the digital life of a vehicle owner. Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD, Tata Motors, comments “We will make most of the fast-paced innovation cycle that Microsoft has to offer, to create a fully connected and seamless driving experience for our customers.”

The 87th Geneva International Motor Show, scheduled on 7th March 2017 will witness the first showcasing of the connected technology vision. The unveiling will essentially see Tata Motors’ user interface application and services suite, utilizing advanced navigation, predictive maintenance, telematics, and remote monitoring functionalities powered by Microsoft. “We will provide vehicle owners in India and across the world with a safe, productive, and fun driving experience leveraging the potential of our Microsoft Azure cloud and technologies such as IoT, AI, and machine learning.”

Some of the key application prospects of integrating the connective driving technology can be summarized as:

  • The ability of vehicle owners to receive proactive point-of-interest, shopping and route assist recommendations, based on their profile and location data.
  • The ability to obtain pre-emptive service alerts based on vehicle health data to assist owners in avoiding costly downtime, en-route on planned road trips.
  • The ability to get key vehicle settings updated remotely, over the cloud by utilizing industry-leading firmware over the air (FOTA) and software over the air (SOTA) updates protocols.
  • Another use case involves capturing, analyzing and acting on live road conditions, so as to allow vehicle owners to increase safety, optimize vehicle performance; by avoiding roadblocks and rough terrain.

Furthermore, TAMO, developed recently by Tata Motors will serve as an open platform to foster innovation through a startup ecosystem, and develop vehicles with on-the-go connectivity. The first phase of this partnership for a connected driving experience will witness integration of technologies such as cloud computing, analytics, geospatial mapping and increased human-machine interface. TAMO’s digital ecosystem will assist Tata Motors to support the mainstream business in the future.
