In one of our recent articles, we wrote how IoT is poised to be the next big wave in India. There is a promising future for IoT in the Indian market. Having said that let’s look at a recent development in the National Capital.
According to the latest statement by Tata Communications, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), one of India’s leading natural gas distribution companies along with Tata Communications has deployed the country’s first IoT enabled smart gas meters in a LoRaWAN network.
LoRaWAN stands Low Range Wide Area Network, is a media access control (MAC) protocol for wide area networks. The technology is designed to allow low powered and battery operated devices like IoTs to connect and communicate via the internet in regional or national or even global networks.
The New Smart Gas Meter
Genesis Gas Solutions Private Limited which is based in New Delhi supplies the IoT enabled smart gas meters in partnership with Tata Communications’ LoRaWAN IoT Network. The IoT enabled smart gas meter enables the gas supply to be monitored accurately and in real time. The meter shows the readings against the available credit of the user. Since LoRaWAN consumes very less energy, the battery life of the smart gas meter extends up to 10 years and can be installed independent of the main power source. Besides being an introductory technology which comes with smart features, the new smart gas meter takes out some of the very common problems and limitations of the traditional postpaid meters. The new meter provides solutions for locked customers’ premises, estimated/wrong billing, reversal of bills and tampering of meters. E.S. Ranganathan, Managing Director at IGL made a statement that implementing the smart metering solution has enabled them to eliminate human errors caused by manual metre reading, optimise capacity planning and improve cash flows. Tata Communications has already established an IoT network in the National Capital Region(NCR) Delhi which has now been extended to Rewari, Haryana. The report says that 5000 prepaid Genesis smart gas meters have been successfully deployed in the city as an initial stage of deployment. Senior Vice President and Head for Internet of Things at Tata Communications, VS Shridhar, said “Technology advancements such as IoT are laying the foundation of Digital India and the future is smart. Smart metering is gathering pace in the energy market, boosting efficiencies and enhancing the customer experience,” He also added that, when underpinned by the right IoT platform, and connected with other solutions in a smart city, they could pave the way for additional value-added services for the benefit of consumers, businesses and society as a whole. Tata Communications is laying a solid foundation for IoT technology in the country with an IoT network which will be the largest in the World, spanning nearly 2,000 communities and reaching over 400 million people. The company has successfully established its LoRaWAN network in 45 cities currently with plans to expand to many more cities over the coming years.Outlook
Tata Communications seems to be driving India ahead with the technology. With wide applications for IoT in the country, Tata seems to understand the possibility of an IoT future. In 2017, the company had already announced its ambitious plans about investing millions in IoT. Over the coming years, we may see more IoT infusions brought by Tata Communications across multiple applications such as water management and street lighting IoT solutions.- AI Productivity to Add $28 Billion to $84 Billion to India's GDP: Cognizant Study
