AI and data analytics could become critical tools in detecting corruption and collusion in government procurement, Comptroller and Auditor General of India K Sanjay Murthy said on May 20, urging stronger collaboration between India’s audit and competition watchdogs to protect public funds.

Speaking at the 17th Annual Day of the Competition Commission of India, Murthy said the growing scale and complexity of public procurement require technology-driven oversight systems capable of identifying anti-competitive practices such as bid rigging and cartelisation.

He noted that closer coordination between the CAG and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) would help authorities detect unfair practices in government tenders more effectively while improving transparency and accountability in public spending.

According to Murthy, the use of AI-led monitoring systems and data-based analysis can enable regulators and audit bodies to identify suspicious procurement patterns at an early stage, reducing financial leakages and strengthening governance outcomes.

He also stressed that anti-competitive conduct in public procurement has a direct impact on citizen welfare by affecting how efficiently taxpayer money is spent.

The remarks come as government institutions and regulators across India increasingly explore the use of AI, analytics and digital governance technologies to modernise compliance systems and improve oversight across public sector operations.
