Anthropic currently leads the AI sector in revenue efficiency, generating $9 million per employee, according to data from research firm EpochAI.

This figure places the company ahead of OpenAI, which earns $5.6 million per employee. Should either firm pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in the near future, its revenue per employee would surpass that of any existing public technology company.

Epoch AI stated that Anthropic has 3,328 employees as of April 2026, while OpenAI had 4,432 employees in February 2026.

For comparison, NVIDIA generates roughly $5.1 million in revenue per employee with a workforce of approximately 42,000. Google, with a massive headcount of 191,000 employees, generates a significantly lower $2.1 million per staff member.

While financial data for established public corporations is sourced from mandatory regulatory filings, the figures for private entities like Anthropic and OpenAI were derived from the EpochAI AI Companies Database. It calculates performance benchmarks by aggregating and analysing verified public media reports and industry disclosures.

Despite achieving unprecedented revenue growth, both OpenAI and Anthropic are operating at significant financial deficits.

OpenAI projects a $14 billion loss for 2026 alone, nearly three times its 2025 loss. The company's trajectory suggests a cumulative cash burn of $115 billion through 2029, with profitability not expected until the 2030s.

Conversely, Anthropic is demonstrating a faster path toward financial sustainability, despite its own heavy capital consumption. Driven by strong enterprise adoption and an estimated annualised revenue run rate of $30 billion achieved in early 2026, the company forecasts reducing its cash burn to approximately one-third of its revenue this year.

Anthropic projects that this burn rate will further decrease to 9% by 2027, positioning the firm to reach the break-even point by 2028.

EpochAI also suggested that Anthropic could surpass OpenAI in annualised revenue by mid-2026. Since reaching the $1 billion milestone, Anthropic’s revenue has grown at 10x per year, significantly outpacing OpenAI’s, which is growing at 3.4x per year.

As of May, OpenAI has raised roughly $180–190 billion in total funding, while Anthropic has raised roughly $64–70 billion.
