Amazon Web Services has announced a collaboration with SHI International Corp’s India arm to support indigenous AI model development under the government’s IndiaAI Mission, as the country sharpens its focus on building sovereign AI capabilities.
The partnership will make AWS’s AI and cloud infrastructure services available to government departments, startups, enterprises, academic institutions, and research organisations through SHI India, which has been empanelled under the IndiaAI Mission.
As part of the collaboration, SHI India will offer AWS tools such as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock, enabling organisations to train, customise, and deploy large language models without managing complex GPU-based infrastructure.
The move comes at a time when India is accelerating investments in homegrown AI capabilities, with a focus on reducing reliance on overseas platforms and creating models tailored to local languages, sectors, and governance needs.
“India’s ambition to lead in AI is not simply about access to technology; it is about building an environment where innovation becomes the core,” Sandeep Dutta, President, AWS India and South Asia, said in a statement. He added that the collaboration is aimed at helping organisations move AI projects from experimentation to real-world deployment.
According to the companies, AWS’s infrastructure stack will address operational bottlenecks in large-scale model training through automated cluster setup, self-healing node recovery, and reduced downtime during GPU failures, capabilities that are particularly critical for training foundation models.
For SHI India, formerly known as Locuz, the partnership strengthens its role in government and enterprise digital transformation projects. The company said it would combine AWS’s AI stack with local implementation and regulatory expertise to support adoption across sectors.
“The IndiaAI Mission represents a transformative opportunity for India’s technology sector,” said Uttam Majumdar, Senior Vice President, SHI India.
