Anthropic has introduced a new capability for its Claude AI assistant that allows it to operate a user’s computer and finish tasks without much human intervention.
Felix Rieseberg, Engineering Lead for Claude Cowork and Claude Code Desktop, said on X that the new feature allows Claude to control a user’s computer through the mouse, keyboard, and screen, effectively allowing it to operate any application.
He added that it becomes especially useful when paired with Dispatch, which lets users remotely direct Claude on their computer while they are away.
“It opens your apps, navigates your browser, fills in spreadsheets—anything you'd do sitting at your desk,” the company said in a post on X. The feature is currently available as a research preview within Claude Cowork and Claude Code for Pro and Max subscribers on macOS.
Anthropic said Claude prioritises integrations with connected tools such as Slack and Calendar, and seeks user permission before directly interacting with applications when no integration exists.
“When there’s no connector for the tool you need, it asks for your permission to open the app on your screen directly,” the company said.
The system is designed to handle asynchronous work across devices. “Assign a task from your phone… and come back to finished work on your computer,” it added, positioning the feature as part of a broader push toward AI-driven task delegation.
The update builds on Anthropic’s Cowork platform, launched earlier this year as a digital coworker designed to carry out tasks across files and applications, moving beyond chat-based assistants. The company has been expanding Claude’s capabilities from coding into broader productivity workflows, including document processing and report generation.
