Cognizant has launched a new engineering talent programme aimed at building a specialised pool of AI focused developers, indicating the growing emphasis among IT services firms on developing in-house capabilities to support enterprise AI adoption.
The Nasdaq-listed company on Wednesday announced the launch of its ‘Ace Team’ programme, which it described as a combination of a selective hiring initiative, an elite talent pathway and a centrally governed engineering community.
The company said members of the Ace Team will work on client projects using AI native tools, modern software architectures and outcome driven engineering methods.
Engineers selected under the programme are expected to contribute to building production grade AI applications, including retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems, agentic AI workflows and large language model integrated applications.
According to Cognizant, the programme is aligned with its three strategic priorities – improving productivity through AI and industrialising AI adoption across enterprises. The company said the initiative is intended to support the development of niche AI offerings and large scale technology modernisation programmes.
Selection for the programme will be based on technical capabilities, AI proficiency and communication skills rather than educational pedigree alone. Candidates will undergo assessments covering areas such as full stack AI development, data structures and algorithms, prompt engineering, RAG systems, agentic AI and modern front end technologies.
In the first phase, the programme will be open to existing offer holders and select off campus candidates, including graduates from leading institutions.
The development comes at a time when global technology services firms increasingly invest in specialised AI talent amid rising enterprise demand for generative AI and agentic AI deployments.
Rajesh Varrier, President – Global Operations, Chairman and Managing Director of Cognizant India, said enterprises are rapidly shifting from AI experimentation to real world implementation, increasing the need for AI ready engineering talent.
“The launch of the Cognizant Ace Team program marks a critical step in strengthening our engineering depth as enterprises move rapidly from AI experimentation to real-world execution. Delivering measurable, scalable AI outcomes increasingly depends on AI-ready skills and strong engineering fundamentals,” Varrier said in a statement.
Cognizant said it plans to expand participation over time to include students from premium campuses, partner institutions, existing employees and lateral hires with up to three years of experience.
