OpenAI has selected Cognizant among a small group of global partners to scale Codex’s impact across enterprise clients, embedding the AI system into its engineering workflows worldwide.

Cognizant is integrating the cloud-based AI software engineering agent directly into its Software Engineering Group, with the goal of making it a standardised capability for building and delivering software across industries.

OpenAI is working with a group of global systems integrators to deploy and scale Codex in complex enterprise environments, enabling clients to adopt AI-driven software development at scale. Cognizant’s inclusion reflects its track record as an “AI builder,” focused on designing, deploying and operating AI-powered systems across enterprises and within its own operations.

"The best engineering organisations of the next decade will not be defined by how many engineers they have, but by how effectively human judgment and AI capability work as one," said Rajesh Varrier, President – Global Operations and Chairman and Managing Director, Cognizant India, in a statement.

"We are embedding Codex as a partner in how our engineers work—handling code generation, refactoring, testing and documentation—so our teams can apply human judgement where it is needed most. OpenAI brings frontier intelligence. Cognizant brings enterprise scale, deep industry expertise, and the governance rigour that industry requires," he added.

Cognizant engineers are already using Codex across the software development lifecycle in client engagements, including AI and machine learning model development, code refactoring, agentic solution development, and legacy system modernisation.

The company said these deployments are helping accelerate delivery cycles, improve code quality, and reduce the cost and risk of large-scale modernisation programmes, particularly in legacy transformation projects that have historically been slowed by complexity, regulatory risk, and dependence on institutional knowledge.

"Codex is becoming a powerful workspace for managing agents across software development and business workflows. As enterprises move quickly to put Codex to work, we’re working with leading partners like Cognizant to help more organisations move from early usage to repeatable deployment," said Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer, OpenAI.

"Cognizant's deep expertise in large-scale software transformation enables enterprises to deploy Codex across areas like legacy code modernisation, code review automation, vulnerability detection, and application development, while extending its impact to the systems and workflows where knowledge work gets done. We will work together to bring Codex to organisations worldwide," she added.

The partnership adds Codex to Cognizant’s broader AI builder stack, which spans multiple AI platforms and hyperscalers. The company said its strategy focuses on bridging the gap between AI investment and business outcomes through enterprise context, workflow integration and operational accountability.
