India now has 27 million developers on GitHub, with more than two million joining in 2026 so far, the company said. The additions account for one in seven new developers globally, the highest share by any country.
“India is the fastest-growing developer community on GitHub and continues to expand,” the company said.
India is also the largest base of open source contributors and the second-largest source of open source contributions overall, behind the United States. Developers from India have made more than 7.5 million contributions to open source AI projects on the platform, making the country the second-largest contributor to open source AI globally.
Projects built in India are seeing global adoption. Examples include Hyperswitch in payments, ERPNext in enterprise software, ToolJet in low-code development, and Bruno in API testing.
GitHub said more than 180 million developers use its platform, including over 90% of Fortune 100 companies. More than 77,000 organisations have adopted GitHub Copilot.
“Developers in India are contributing to open source and building tools used worldwide,” the company said.
Over the past year, Microsoft has more tightly integrated GitHub with its CoreAI division led by Jay Parikh, reflecting the platform’s growing role in its developer strategy. Former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke exited the company last year, after which the remaining leadership team began reporting directly to the CoreAI unit.
