As AI reshapes the global technology landscape, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has called on India's IT services industry to accelerate its transition to an AI-driven services ecosystem, focusing on reskilling and talent development rather than fears of job displacement.
The message came during an industry consultation on “Supporting AI Transformation of IT Services Industry”, convened by MeitY in Kochi and chaired by S Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY.
The consultation brought together senior government officials, industry leaders, and technology stakeholders to discuss the future of India's $246 billion IT exports sector amid rapid advances in Generative AI, automation, and cloud technologies.
Addressing participants, Krishnan emphasised the growing demand for AI-skilled professionals and India's opportunity to emerge as a global talent hub.
“The development and deployment of AI applications will require a large number of trained human resources. That is what India has to offer to the world. The focus must shift from concerns about job loss to investing in reskilling, upskilling, talent development, and technological upgradation,” he said.
The consultation highlighted how client expectations are evolving from traditional process outsourcing to end-to-end digital transformation services powered by AI. As a result, IT and Business Process Management (BPM) firms are increasingly investing in generative AI, agentic AI, analytics, automation, and cloud-based platforms while developing AI-powered products, co-pilots, and enterprise solutions.
Officials noted that the transformation is creating demand for new-age skills and domain-specific expertise across sectors such as banking and financial services (BFSI), healthcare, manufacturing, and retail.
Focus on Workforce Transformation
A key theme of the discussion was the need for large-scale reskilling and upskilling of India's nearly six million-strong IT and BPM workforce to maintain the country's global competitiveness.
Participants examined how the industry is adapting to AI-led changes in service delivery and discussed government interventions to support talent development, technology adoption, and innovation.
The meeting also explored strategies to expand IT and BPM operations into emerging technology hubs beyond traditional metropolitan centres, creating new employment opportunities, and promoting balanced regional growth.
The consultation is part of the government's broader efforts under the IndiaAI Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2024, which seeks to strengthen India's AI ecosystem through investments in computing infrastructure, AI applications, startup support, and future-ready skills.
