In a major development for the Indian startup ecosystem, Y Combinator (YC), a San Francisco-based startup accelerator, has teamed up with Polaris School of Technology and Emergent to create a new route for early-stage student talent in India to join the YC community.

Polaris School of Technology offers a 4-year Computer Science program in Bengaluru designed to prepare students for international technology careers.

This collaboration launches the Vibecon Student Track, a hackathon aimed at discovering proactive student builders and providing them a direct avenue to connect with YC through a hands-on, live building and evaluation process.

Students from all over India can apply in groups of 2-3 by posting brief pitches on the Emergent platform that outline the issue they intend to tackle and their development plan.

“By bringing YC directly to our campus, we are proving that the distance between a dorm room in India and the world's most prestigious accelerator is no longer thousands of miles; it’s a single afternoon of building," Mukul Rustagi, Co-Founder, Polaris School of Technology, said in a statement.

From thousands of applicants, only the top 5 teams will be selected for the on-ground finals at the Polaris campus in Bengaluru on April 16-17. These finalists will engage in a dynamic live build sprint, culminating in presentations to a panel that includes YC representatives and prominent figures from the startup world.

The judging panel features Mukund Jha (CEO, Emergent), Mukul Rustagi (Co-Founder, Polaris School of Technology and Classplus), Shashank Kumar (Co-Founder, Razorpay), and Hemant Mohapatra (Partner, Lightspeed), among others.

The team that wins will have the chance to interview directly with YC partners for an upcoming cohort, effectively skipping the traditional global application procedure.

Additionally, the top three teams will split $10,000 in cash prizes, along with over $10,000 in tools and cloud credits from partners such as AWS, Anthropic, and Razorpay, to help teams advance their ideas without delay.

Last month, YC launched its Startup School programme, which will now take place in India. The initiative aims to bring together some of the finest builders and hackers in the country to discuss the latest advancements in technology and entrepreneurship.
