AIM 100: India's Most Influential People Shaping AI in 2026
Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan
Institute Chair Professor, Dept of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay, and Founding Director, BharatGen

Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan has emerged as one of the key architects of India's sovereign AI movement through BharatGen, the government-backed initiative building indigenous multimodal and multilingual foundation models. Over the past year, he has led the development of resource-efficient AI models while helping establish BharatGen as a translational AI ecosystem spanning academia, startups, and industry.
Under his leadership, BharatGen secured access to 1,400 GPUs through the IndiaAI Mission, built one of India's largest multilingual datasets comprising more than 22 trillion tokens, and joined Project Tapestry, the global initiative led by Yann LeCun to advance distributed AI research. BharatGen is also pursuing a roadmap from 100-billion-parameter models toward a trillion-parameter sovereign model, while focusing on affordable inference and a pragmatic "frontier-minus-one" approach to AI development.
Ramakrishnan believes India's greatest AI opportunity lies in sustained public investment in deeptech research, sovereign infrastructure, and digital autonomy, creating the foundation for globally competitive AI built in India.
