Karnataka Schools to Roll Out Facial Recognition Attendance System

The attendance system will also help track government programmes such as the distribution of eggs, mid-day meals, shoes, and socks.
Embrace Facial Recognition

Karnataka education minister Madhu Bangarappa has announced the introduction of a facial recognition attendance system in state government schools for the upcoming academic year.

During an interaction with reporters in Bagalkote, the minister emphasised the crucial role parents play in ensuring their children consistently attend school and remain engaged in the education system. The proposed facial recognition technology is anticipated to improve student attendance tracking and support their academic advancement, Deccan Herald reported.

The technology is anticipated to deliver precise daily attendance logs for school children, identify absentees, and promote transparency in executing student-centred programmes.

According to The Hindu, the authorities have created a distinct mobile app and incorporated all student details into the Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS).

A source informed the media outlet that the department noticed a difference between the student count registered in the SATS and the actual attendance figures, which must be rectified.

The facial recognition attendance system will also help track the number of students receiving benefits from government programmes, such as the distribution of eggs, mid-day meals, shoes, and socks.

KV Trilok Chandra, commissioner for school education, stated that once the application is prepared, all teachers will install it on their mobile devices. “It will be very simple. Multiple photos can be captured at a time. Teachers just have to rotate the phone with the attendance application in the classroom,” Chandra reportedly said.

Teachers would have to install the app on their smartphones. The app already includes all the information about the students in the SATS, so the facial features will be captured and integrated into it.
AIM earlier reported that the Goa government will launch an AI-based real-time attendance system for the Directorate of Panchayats. The system will monitor employee attendance via facial recognition, aiming to reduce misconduct and improve service delivery.
