Telangana to Establish World-Class Life Sciences University After ₹54,000 Crore Sectoral Growth

The board also reviewed plans for the upgradation of Genome Valley and MedTech Park.

Telangana is set to develop a world-class Telangana School of Life Sciences University, an institution for research, innovation and talent development, as part of its strategy to strengthen the state’s position as a global life sciences powerhouse.

The announcement was made during a board meeting of Telangana Life Sciences Foundation, chaired by D Sridhar Babu, state IT, industries and commerce, electronics and communications and legislative affairs minister, where the rapid growth of the state’s life sciences sector was formally reviewed.

Over the last year, Telangana has attracted over ₹54,000 crore in investments across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, vaccines and digital health.

The government claims that these investments are expected to generate more than two lakh jobs and have pushed Hyderabad into the top seven global life sciences clusters, making it the only Indian city in that league.

“The Telangana School of Life Sciences will be developed in a world-class manner with state-of-the-art facilities,” Babu mentioned.

The proposed university will act as a hub for knowledge, talent and innovation, supported by the state’s existing ecosystem of over 40 national research and academic institutions, over 20 life sciences and MedTech incubators, and more than 250 USFDA-approved manufacturing sites—the highest concentration anywhere in the world.”

The board also reviewed plans for the upgradation of Genome Valley and MedTech Park. The upcoming Telangana Life Sciences Policy was discussed, aimed at catalysing growth through new incentives, infrastructure upgrades, sustainability and talent initiatives.

With the state’s life sciences ecosystem valued at $80 billion today, the proposed university marks the next leap in Telangana’s ambition.
