Twitter has announced its plans to expand its engineering team in India in order to strengthen its offerings for local and global audiences. As part of these plans, the company has also announced the appointment of Apurva Dalal as the Director of Engineering.

In a recent blog post, Twitter’s Vice President of Engineering, Nick Caldwell wrote about the company’s mission “to serve the public conversation and to increase the number of people participating in it by providing more relevant experiences for everyone across the world.” He also shared his excitement on the expansion of its engineering team in India, “a priority market and one of our fastest-growing markets globally,” wrote Caldwell.

To lead this hiring process, Twitter hired Apurva Dalal as Director of Engineering. With over two decades of engineering experience spanning global organisations such as Uber, Google, and eBay, he was serving as the engineering site lead for Uber Bengaluru in her recent work.

According to the official release, starting on 20th April 2021, Apurva will become the senior-most member of Twitter’s engineering team in India and will be responsible for strengthening the company’s engineering capacity.

Twitter’s plans to expand the team are aligned with its overall belief of employing more people, positioning itself with all perspectives and cultures, increasing its development velocity, and creating a solid foundation for its services. The company aims to be “the world’s most diverse, inclusive, and accessible tech company,” and thus, hiring and training local engineering talent would be the right way to go.

The new team in India will be positioned in Bangalore, which will be designed to focus on enhancing its product offerings to new and existing audiences, research and design, along with data science and machine learning, stated the official release.

The social media giant also has dedicated engineering teams in multiple markets, including London, Toronto, and Singapore.

According to Caldwell, the company has been looking to hire for some cutting-edge engineering jobs in India, a country that is a hub for world-class engineering talent. Thus, “under Apurva’s leadership, the strengthened India engineering site will focus on building core capabilities in our technology to enable us to serve the public conversation,” said Caldwell.

Adding to this, Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director, Twitter India, also commented in the official release, “Twitter in India recorded a 74% YoY mDAU growth in Q4 2020. To scale our reach and build a service that is truly for Indians and by Indians, we are investing in expanding our engineering team in the country.”
