The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has partnered with Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellite Communication, allowing the company to utilise Aadhaar-based authentication for verifying customers.

As per a release from the electronics and IT ministry issued on August 20, Aadhaar, recognised as one of the largest digital identity systems in India, will facilitate quick, paperless customer onboarding in adherence to Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations.

According to the ministry, this initiative is anticipated to streamline the entire process, ensuring it is secure and efficient.

Moreover, the ministry noted that the integration of Starlink with Aadhaar authentication showcases a “powerful synergy” between India’s digital identity framework and international satellite technology.

The Aadhaar e-KYC system will help the company easily register users while ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements as it launches high-speed satellite internet services for households, businesses and institutions across India.

“The use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India’s digital infrastructure,” the statement read, highlighting Aadhaar’s capabilities in innovation, while also ensuring “transparency and accountability”.

This year, collaborations with Starlink have increased. In March, Jio Platforms partnered with SpaceX to provide Starlink's high-speed internet services in India. Airtel also announced a similar partnership that same month, pending necessary authorisations.

Within the next few months, Starlink received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Indian telecommunications department (DoT) to start satellite communication services in the country. The LoI grants formal approval for Starlink's satellite-based broadband services to improve internet access in remote areas.

This approval follows the resolution of national security concerns and compliance with India's regulations. As of June 6, Starlink has received licenses for satellite-based connectivity in India.
