Actress Milla Jovovich has unveiled MemPalace, an AI-powered application designed to modernise the ancient “memory palace” technique. The project aims to make this method of enhancing recall more accessible by creating personalised virtual environments where users can store and retrieve information.
In a video posted to Instagram on Monday, Jovovich said she spent months developing the AI knowledge tool MemPalace while working on a separate, unnamed gaming project, after encountering problems with how existing AI systems store and retrieve information.
“But during the process, I stumbled upon a bunch of problems that I knew needed to be solved if I was ever going to get it finished,” Jovovich said in the video.
According to Jovovich, those challenges led to the creation of MemPalace, an open-source system available on GitHub that she describes as a new method for AI memory, storage, and retrieval. Jovovich said she designed the concept and architecture behind the system, while Ben Sigman, a coder and CEO of Bitcoin lending platform Libre Labs, engineered the software.
The memory palace method, also known as the “method of loci”, has been used for over 2,000 years. Traditionally, it requires significant effort to learn and maintain.
The technique involves visualising a familiar space and mentally placing vivid images at specific locations along a route. To recall information, users mentally walk through the imagined space and retrieve the stored items. Neuroscientists at Stanford University have confirmed that this method dramatically improves recall by leveraging spatial memory pathways in the brain.
MemPalace builds on this framework by adding an AI layer that generates personalised virtual environments. Users can assign information to specific locations and later rehearse and retrieve it through guided sessions.
Details of MemPalace’s full feature set are still emerging. The core idea is to generate tailored virtual environments based on user preferences, making the ancient mnemonic system practical for modern use.
