Anthropic has hired Amlan Mohanty to lead policy in India as the company accelerates its expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets. Mohanty previously served as public policy counsel at Google from 2018 to 2022.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Anthropic to lead policy in India,” Mohanty said in a LinkedIn post.
Anthropic plans to deepen engagement with policymakers, enterprises, and civil society as it builds a local presence.
“I’m excited to shape Anthropic’s early presence in India and build trusted partnerships with government, industry and civil society,” he added.
He brings to Anthropic experience from a portfolio of policy and academic roles, including a fellow at Carnegie India, a non-resident fellow at NITI Aayog, an associate fellow at the Centre for Responsible AI, and a visiting professor at the National Law School of India University.
His appointment comes at a time when India has emerged as a key geography for the AI firm.
The company has already set up its first office in Bengaluru and is scaling local hiring and partnerships across sectors. Irina Ghose, a former Microsoft India executive, was recently appointed to lead the country operations and drive enterprise adoption of AI.
India is now the second-largest market globally for Claude, with usage heavily skewed toward technical applications such as coding and software development. Nearly half of the usage in India is concentrated in computer and mathematical tasks.
Mohanty underscored India’s importance in the global AI landscape, calling it “key to the future of AI,” citing its scale, diversity, and potential for impact. “What works well here can be replicated in other parts of the world,” he said.
He added that his early experience inside the company has reinforced both the promise and risks of the technology. “Two weeks inside a frontier AI lab has left me feeling more convinced about the power of this technology to radically improve our lives… [but] we need to be mindful of the risks and act thoughtfully,” he noted.
