Bluehill VC has led a ₹10.2 crore seed funding round in semiconductor metrology startup Makr Microsystems. Artha Venture Fund also participated in the round. The investment will support technology development, customer validation and commercial deployment.
Bengaluru-based Makr Microsystems is developing nanoscale 3D subsurface metrology products for semiconductor manufacturers. Its technology helps chipmakers visualise and measure structures and defects beneath semiconductor surfaces.
The startup uses Acoustic Atomic Force Microscopy (AAFM), acoustic sensing and 3D data analytics. Its approach aims to enable high-resolution, non-destructive measurement below semiconductor surfaces.
The technology targets inspection challenges in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Makr says it can support process control, defect detection and yield improvement.
Makr’s initial applications include advanced packaging, hybrid bonding, buried interfaces and chiplet interconnects. The company is also targeting defect detection in semiconductor manufacturing.
Current metrology techniques involve trade-offs involving resolution, depth and inspection speed. They can also require sample damage or preparation, according to the company.
Makr Founder Ashwin Lal said semiconductor manufacturing is creating structures that are increasingly difficult to measure. He said the shift towards 3D architectures makes subsurface analysis important for improving yield.
“Our goal is to make the subsurface measurable, non-destructively and at the resolution the next generation of chipmaking demands,” Lal said.
Bluehill said the investment reflects its focus on technologies deeper within the semiconductor value chain. The fund is looking beyond chip companies towards equipment, materials and measurement technologies.
The firm recently announced the final close of its maiden fund at ₹400 crore. It invests from Seed to Series A across sectors including semiconductors, defence, space and advanced materials.
