Bihar’s Education Department has partnered with 11 IT firms, including Google Education, to equip government school teachers with skills in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies.

The initiative will receive support from the Union government’s skill development department and include practical IT training. It is part of Bihar’s broader plan to expand digital learning, including making computer education compulsory from Class 6 in government schools from the next academic session and introducing smart classrooms in 700 model schools.

Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the training would prioritise AI, with the aim of improving teaching quality, according to Dainik Jagran.

The Education Department is arranging centralised training at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) campus. The participating companies will conduct sessions in separate batches, while school principals will nominate teachers for the programme. The training is expected to help educators develop digital skills they can apply in school settings.

The state aims to have the training arrangements in place by January, according to Dainik Jagran. However, the report did not specify how many teachers will participate or how long the training will last.

Alongside the teacher training initiative, Bihar plans to make computer education compulsory for students from 6th standard and above in all government schools from the next academic session. The move is intended to introduce students to digital learning earlier in their schooling.

The department also plans to strengthen IT infrastructure to support the expansion of computer education. The department plans smart classrooms for 700 model schools, with facilities expected to extend to other government schools in phases.

The smart classroom rollout, alongside teacher training and compulsory computer education, is part of Bihar’s broader plan to expand technology use in government schools. Its progress will depend on delivering the training and installing the planned infrastructure.
