Figma has launched new capabilities in Figma Make, its proprietary AI suite, allowing users to work directly in production codebases from within the platform, as product teams increasingly seek tighter links between design and development.

The update enables designers, developers, and product teams to visually edit interfaces, annotate changes, collaborate on code, and manage Git workflows without leaving Figma. The features are available in limited beta through Figma Make’s desktop app for Mac users. The company said the rollout began on May 28, and users can join a waitlist for early access.

Figma described the update as its “first step toward bringing together freeform design, prototyping with code, and shipping to production”. The beta includes direct editing, annotations, chat, and pull request creation. These features will not consume AI credits during the beta period. The pricing details for AI credits will be announced later.

While the company has simplified the setup for non-technical users, the process still requires refinement. For now, the functionality is best suited for designers who already have access to their organisation’s codebase.

The launch marks Figma’s latest push into code-based product development as AI reshapes software workflows. The company said teams can now connect running applications to Figma Make and work directly with real codebases instead of static prototypes.

Figma said the new capabilities aim to remove friction between design and engineering teams. Users can make direct visual edits to interfaces by selecting elements and changing layouts, colours, fonts, or sizing. Figma Make then identifies the relevant code and applies the edits.

For changes that go beyond visual properties, such as interactions or animations, users can annotate interface elements with instructions. The company said these annotations give its AI agent contextual information to make code-level updates.

“‘Design vs code’ is a false dichotomy,” Figma mentioned in a statement. “Tools should not limit the ability to move between these worlds.”

The company argued that coding tools still lag behind collaborative design software. “We’re still stuck in 2016 when it comes to collaboration,” it said, adding that many users do not find integrated development environments and terminals intuitive.

The update also adds support for Git workflows. Teams can create branches, revert commits, and manage version histories directly in Figma Make. Changes remain as local commits until teams open a pull request through their standard engineering review process.

Figma said teams will also be able to share code changes through links. Once teammates gain access to a branch, they can view edits, build on changes, and compare revisions through commit histories.

The platform also allows users to move screens, pages, and components between Figma Make and the Figma design canvas. Teams can edit these visually and sync decisions back into code.

“The goal is to close the loop entirely,” the company said, describing a workflow where teams can move between design feedback and code development in one place.
