Google is expanding its footprint in India, leasing a large office tower in Bengaluru and securing options to take up additional space in the city’s main technology hub, according to Reuters.
The company has reportedly signed a lease for more than 656,000 sq ft at Alembic City in Bengaluru, based on a document from real estate data analytics firm Propstack. The agreement also gives Google the option to occupy more buildings within the same complex.
Bloomberg earlier reported that the combined leased and optional space could total about 2.4 million square feet. If fully utilised, the campus could house up to 20,000 additional employees, potentially more than doubling Google’s presence in India.
The Reuters report added that the company maintains operations across India and in 2024 leased a tower of roughly 650,000 sq ft in Bengaluru. Google currently operates from three offices in the city and last year opened one of its largest offices globally in Bengaluru.
The expansion comes as US technology firms reassess global workforce strategies amid tighter immigration policies, including increased scrutiny of H-1B visas and possible taxes on outsourced work. Google is among the top sponsors of H-1B visas, according to US government data.
India remains central to Google’s long-term plans. In October, the company announced it would invest $15 billion over five years to set up an AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh, its largest investment in the country to date.
