IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures have jointly launched ‘IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I’, a ₹600 crore deep tech-focused venture capital fund, with an additional ₹400 crore greenshoe option. The initiative aims to accelerate India’s next generation of IP-led, engineering-intensive startups aligned with national strategic priorities.

Positioned as a 10+2 year “patient capital” fund, the initiative will invest across 25+ deep tech companies operating in sectors such as robotics, space tech, defence tech, semiconductors, medtech, and other advanced engineering domains critical to India’s long-term technological sovereignty.

The fund will have an average first cheque size of ₹8–10 crore and follow a dual-stage investment strategy spanning early- to growth-stage companies.

A majority of the fund’s portfolio will focus on early-stage startups at technology readiness levels (TRL) 3–4, supporting them through early commercialisation challenges.

The fund will also allocate capital to startups at TRL 5–7 to accelerate concept-proven technologies, while selectively backing TRL 7–9 companies with validated products requiring scale-up and market expansion.

Developed by NASA, TRLs measure the maturity of a technology, ranging from basic, early-stage research to proven, fully operational, and commercialised systems.

According to the firms, around 60% of the investable corpus will be deployed towards initial investments, with 40% reserved for follow-on rounds to ensure sustained capital support through the “Valley of Death” typical of deep tech ventures.

Valley of Death for deep tech startups signify a critical period where startups have already developed promising lab-stage technology but lack the capital for commercialising.

A significant portion of investments will be sourced from the IIT Madras ecosystem, with the remaining capital deployed across the broader Indian deep tech landscape.

“Science and technology will play a crucial role in the growth story and towards India becoming Viksit Bharat 2047, focusing on technology sovereignty, AI, semiconductors, defencetech and quantum technology. The need of the hour is to reduce reliance on technology imports and strengthen indigenous capabilities. IIT Madras has been in the forefront of this wave for over a decade, and this fund is the next logical step for us,” Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Director of IIT Madras, said in a statement.

IIT Madras’ Research Park and Incubation Cell host global R&D labs, Centres of Excellence, and incubators, and have played a critical role in translational research and startup commercialisation across space tech, climate tech, EVs, semiconductors, quantum, communications, and defence tech.

“India’s deep tech ecosystem is at a pivotal moment, driven by supportive policies, sustained R&D investments, and a strong entrepreneurial aspiration among our youth,” Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IITM Research Park, added.

Unicorn India Ventures will act as the fund manager. It will mobilise capital beyond the primary fund corpus through co-investment structures and will lead fundraising efforts from IIT Madras alumni, alongside its global network of family offices, UHNIs, and institutional investors, ensuring portfolio companies remain well-capitalised through long development cycles.

“As an active deep tech investor, we have already built a portfolio of nearly 30 companies, and this new fund in partnership with IITMRP comes at the right time as we have met numerous innovative deep tech companies in the last two years,” Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing Partner, Unicorn India Ventures, said.
