A British AI law firm, Garfield AI, has won in an English court, marking what is considered the first instance of a trial won with the assistance of an AI lawyer.
Tamires Camal Taquidir, a freelance HR consultant, paid Garfield AI around £400 to draft a legal letter and initiate court proceedings concerning an unpaid debt of £7,000.
“I was owed money for work I had done, but it felt like the process of recovering it could be too stressful, expensive and time-consuming. Garfield made it possible for me to pursue the claim and keep going. When the counterclaim was brought, it was intended to intimidate me, but I knew I had accessible, cost-effective, and competent support. I'm delighted by the result,” Taquidir told The Financial Times.
Philip Young, CEO and Co-founder of Garfield, described it as a "historic moment" for access to justice and noted that many small businesses have had to forgo debts due to the high cost of litigation relative to the potential recovery. “Here, a freelancer who had done the work and not been paid was able to take her case all the way to trial, resist a counterclaim, and win,” he said.
Garfield can handle claims ranging from £30 to £10,000 and prepares the case, subsequently enlisting a human barrister to represent the client in court.
“AI did not replace the judge, the barrister or the legal system. What it did was make the process more accessible, more efficient, and more affordable, so that a meritorious claimant could get to the point where her case could be heard, and justice could be done,” Young added.
While the AI lawyer automated the document-heavy preparation stages, the firm integrated human expertise for oral presentation. Shortly before the trial, Garfield AI instructed Dominic Li, a junior barrister from One Essex Court, to represent Taquidir in front of the judge.
It produced four witness statements and compiled a set of documents for the three-hour trial held at Wandsworth County Court on May 14. The court ruled in favour of Taquidir and awarded her the outstanding amount.
Li, barrister for the claimant, told FT, “This was a hard-fought small claim that turned on the existence and terms of an oral agreement. Garfield AI's preparation helped ensure the case was presented clearly and efficiently, while the advocacy at trial remained essential and a fundamentally human exercise.”
