In a significant push to democratise access to emerging technologies and strengthen the state's digital talent pipeline, the Karnataka government will establish 50 AI laboratories in government colleges across the state.

The initiative, announced in the Karnataka State Budget 2026-27, will be implemented in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission and is aimed at equipping students—particularly those in tier-2 and tier-3 cities—with industry-relevant skills in cutting-edge technologies.

The AI laboratories will offer hands-on training in AI, machine learning, data science, and other advanced technologies through practical learning modules, innovation-driven projects, and skill development programmes. The move is expected to enhance employability among students while preparing them for careers in the rapidly evolving digital economy.

Announcing the initiative, Priyank Kharge, Karnataka's Minister for Home, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and E-Governance, emphasised the importance of expanding access to technology education beyond major urban centres.

“The future of employment will be shaped by technology, and it is imperative that opportunities to acquire these skills are accessible beyond major urban centres. Through these AI Laboratories, we are enabling students in tier-2 and tier-3 regions to gain hands-on exposure to emerging technologies, build industry-relevant capabilities and participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” he said.

The laboratories will be equipped with modern AI-enabled infrastructure designed to support experimentation, practical learning, innovation, and problem-solving. The government believes the initiative will help bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements while fostering technological proficiency among students.

Under the IndiaAI Mission, each laboratory will receive financial assistance of ₹68.98 lakh over three years, disbursed in three instalments. Complementing this support, the Karnataka government has sanctioned ₹10 crore for the project, with ₹6.29 crore earmarked for release during the first year.

As part of the rollout, the state has also approved the selection of 23 educational institutions in the first phase to establish AI data laboratories.

The initiative aligns with Karnataka's broader vision of strengthening its innovation ecosystem and ensuring that access to advanced technology infrastructure extends beyond metropolitan hubs.
