Mercedes‑Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has entered into a five-year Master Research Agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to collaborate on advanced research programmes spanning emerging engineering and mobility technologies.
The partnership is designed to strengthen industry-academia collaboration and will focus on research areas including quantum technologies, future materials, neuromorphic engineering, and electric mobility.
The joint initiatives aim to bridge fundamental research with real-world engineering applications, enabling the development of new intellectual property and scalable technology solutions.
The collaboration comes at a milestone moment for the German automaker’s India R&D arm. According to MBRDI, the partnership aligns with its broader innovation journey as the company marks 30 years of engineering operations in India.
Manu Saale, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India, said in a statement, “Our collaboration with IIT Delhi is a significant leap for our legacy of innovation, helping us redefine mobility faster and better. Together, we aim to shape solutions that make a difference today and in the years ahead.”
Under the agreement, interdisciplinary teams from IIT Delhi and MBRDI will work together on joint research, prototype development, and real-world validation of emerging technologies.
Prof Preeti Ranjan Panda, Dean of Corporate Relations at IIT Delhi, said, “Through this initiative, the Institute seeks to advance high-quality research and generate impactful innovations that enable sustainable, affordable, and future-ready mobility. Our objective is to develop solutions that address India’s mobility challenges while establishing new benchmarks for global impact.”
As part of the first phase of the collaboration, the partners will launch a research project on quantum sensors and advanced battery systems.
The initiative will be led by Prof Nirat Ray from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi, with Prof Saurabh Saxena from the Centre for Applied Research and Technology jointly steering the research efforts.
The project will bring together interdisciplinary researchers and engineering teams to accelerate innovation through collaborative experimentation and deployment, with the goal of building high-impact technology solutions for the future of mobility.
